TENS Machine for Hip Pain
A PORTABLE, DRUG-FREE OPTION FOR MANAGING HIP PAIN
Hip pain can make everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, exercising and sleeping uncomfortable.
A TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) provides a portable, drug-free option that may provide temporary pain relief for some types of hip pain. Small electrical impulses are delivered through electrode pads placed on the skin around the painful area, stimulating the nerves and helping to reduce the perception of pain.
TENS can be used at home or on the go, making it a convenient option for people looking for a non-medication approach to managing hip pain.
TECHNOLOGY THAT COMBINES PAIN MANAGEMENT AND MUSCLE STIMULATION
Our TENS/EMS machines offer DUAL FUNCTIONALITY, giving you both TENS and EMS functions in one device.
One device. Two functions.

BENEFITS OF USING A TENS MACHINE FOR HIP PAIN
TENS provides a non-medication option that may provide temporary relief from some types of hip pain.
Electrode pads can be positioned around the hip and surrounding area according to where you are experiencing pain.
Control the intensity of the electrical stimulation to find a comfortable level that suits you.
Portable and reusable, making TENS a practical option for people managing recurring hip pain.
TENS PAD PLACEMENT FOR HIP PAIN
Correct electrode placement can make a difference to your TENS experience.
For hip pain, pads are generally positioned around the area where pain is being experienced. Depending on the location of your pain, this may include the outer hip, upper buttock or surrounding muscles.
With a dual-channel TENS machine, four pads provide greater flexibility and can be positioned around the painful area to provide broader coverage.
The exact placement will depend on where you experience pain and the type of TENS machine you are using.
WHAT IS CAUSING YOUR HIP PAIN?
Hip pain can have many different causes, including arthritis, overuse, injury and problems involving the muscles, tendons or other structures around the hip.
Pain felt around the hip can also sometimes originate from another area, such as the lower back.
TENS is used to help manage pain rather than treat the underlying cause, so persistent, severe or unexplained hip pain should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
If your hip pain is associated with arthritis, see our dedicated guide:
TENS AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT
TENS may also be considered as part of pain management during recovery following hip surgery, but using TENS after a hip replacement is different from managing general hip pain.
You should follow the advice of your surgeon, physiotherapist or other healthcare professional regarding when and where TENS can be used following surgery. Electrode pads should not be placed over a surgical wound or incision.
PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE TIP
Did you know that some private health insurers may provide rebates towards the purchase of a TENS machine?
Eligibility and rebate amounts depend on your insurer and level of cover.

PORTABLE PAIN MANAGEMENT AT HOME OR ON THE GO
Our TENS machines are compact and portable, allowing you to use your device at home or take it with you while travelling.
TENS doesn't treat the underlying cause of hip pain, and results vary between individuals. However, some people find TENS useful for temporary pain relief as one part of their overall pain-management approach.
USING TENS SAFELY
TENS should feel comfortable rather than painful. Do not place electrode pads over broken, irritated or infected skin, surgical wounds or other unsuitable areas.
TENS may not be appropriate for everyone, including some people with implanted electrical devices such as pacemakers. If you have new or unexplained hip pain, have recently injured your hip, have undergone surgery, or are unsure whether TENS is suitable for you, seek advice from your doctor, physiotherapist or other healthcare professional.
Seek medical advice for severe or persistent hip pain, significant swelling, inability to bear weight, or pain following a significant injury.
TENS is intended to assist with temporary pain management and does not treat the underlying cause of hip pain.
