TENS Machine for Sciatica Pain
A PORTABLE, DRUG-FREE OPTION FOR MANAGING SCIATICA PAIN
Sciatica can cause pain that travels from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg, sometimes accompanied by tingling, numbness or weakness.
A TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) provides a portable, drug-free option that may provide temporary pain relief for some people with sciatica. Small electrical impulses are delivered through electrode pads placed on the skin, stimulating the nerves and helping to reduce the perception of pain.
TENS can be used at home or on the go, making it a convenient option for people looking for a non-medication approach to managing sciatica pain.
TECHNOLOGY THAT COMBINES PAIN MANAGEMENT AND MUSCLE STIMULATION
Our TENS/EMS machines offer DUAL FUNCTIONALITY, giving you both TENS and EMS functions in one device.
One device. Two functions.

BENEFITS OF USING A TENS MACHINE FOR SCIATICA PAIN
TENS provides a non-medication option that may provide temporary relief from sciatica pain.
Because sciatica can cause pain in the lower back, buttock and leg, electrode pads can be positioned according to where your symptoms are being experienced.
Control the intensity of the electrical stimulation to find a comfortable level that suits you.
Portable and reusable, making TENS a practical option for managing recurring episodes of sciatica pain.
TENS PAD PLACEMENT FOR SCIATICA
Where you position your TENS pads will depend on where you experience your sciatic pain.
Sciatica commonly causes pain that starts around the lower back or buttock and travels down one leg. TENS pads can therefore be positioned around the areas where the pain is being experienced rather than trying to place pads directly over the sciatic nerve itself.
With a dual-channel TENS machine, four pads provide greater flexibility, allowing you to position pads around the lower back and buttock or further along the area where pain is being experienced.
Correct placement varies between individuals.
WHAT ABOUT LOWER BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA?
Sciatica and lower back pain are often discussed together, but they are not the same thing.
Lower back pain may remain primarily in the back, while sciatica typically involves pain or other symptoms that radiate from the lower back or buttock into the leg along the path associated with the sciatic nerve.
If your pain is primarily located in your lower back, see our dedicated guide:
PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE TIP
Did you know that some private health insurers may provide rebates towards the purchase of a TENS machine?
Eligibility and rebate amounts depend on your insurer and level of cover.

PORTABLE PAIN MANAGEMENT AT HOME OR ON THE GO
Our TENS machines are compact and portable, allowing you to use your device at home or take it with you to work or while travelling.
TENS doesn't treat the underlying cause of sciatica, and results vary between individuals. However, some people find TENS useful for temporary pain relief as one part of their overall pain-management approach.
USING TENS SAFELY
TENS should feel comfortable rather than painful. Do not place electrode pads directly over the spine, broken or irritated skin, or other unsuitable areas.
TENS may not be appropriate for everyone, including some people with implanted electrical devices such as pacemakers. If you are using TENS for the first time, have new or unexplained sciatic pain, or are unsure whether TENS is suitable for you, seek advice from your doctor, physiotherapist or other healthcare professional.
Seek urgent medical attention if back or sciatic pain is accompanied by significant or worsening weakness, numbness around the genital or buttock area, or changes to bladder or bowel control.
TENS is intended to assist with temporary pain management and does not treat the underlying cause of sciatica.
