TENS Machine for Lower Back Pain
A PORTABLE, DRUG-FREE OPTION FOR MANAGING LOWER BACK PAIN
Lower back pain is extremely common and can affect everything from sitting and sleeping to work, exercise and everyday activities.
A TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) provides a portable, drug-free option that may provide temporary pain relief for some people. Small electrical impulses are delivered through electrode pads placed on the skin around the painful area, stimulating the nerves and helping to reduce the perception of pain.
TENS can be used at home or on the go, making it a convenient option for people looking for a non-medication approach to managing lower back pain.
TECHNOLOGY THAT COMBINES PAIN MANAGEMENT AND MUSCLE STIMULATION
Our TENS/EMS machines offer DUAL FUNCTIONALITY, giving you both TENS and EMS functions in one device.
One device. Two functions.

BENEFITS OF USING A TENS MACHINE FOR LOWER BACK PAIN
TENS provides a non-medication option that may provide temporary relief from some types of lower back pain.
Electrode pads can be positioned around the area of lower back pain, allowing electrical stimulation to be directed where you need it.
Control the intensity of the electrical stimulation to find a comfortable level that suits you.
Portable and reusable, making TENS a practical option for managing recurring episodes of lower back pain.
TENS PAD PLACEMENT FOR LOWER BACK PAIN
Correct electrode placement can make a difference to your TENS experience.
For lower back pain, pads are generally positioned around the painful area rather than directly over the spine. With a dual-channel TENS machine, four pads can be positioned around the area to provide broader coverage.
The exact placement will depend on where you experience pain and the type of TENS machine you are using.
WHAT ABOUT LOWER BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA?
Lower back pain can sometimes occur together with pain that travels into the buttock or leg. Sciatica describes symptoms caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve and may require a different approach to electrode placement.
If your pain travels from your lower back into your buttock or leg, see our dedicated guide:
PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE TIP
Did you know that some private health insurers may provide rebates towards the purchase of a TENS machine?
Eligibility and rebate amounts depend on your insurer and level of cover.

PORTABLE PAIN MANAGEMENT AT HOME OR ON THE GO
Our TENS machines are compact and portable, allowing you to use your device at home or take it with you to work or while travelling.
TENS doesn't treat the underlying cause of lower back pain, and results vary between individuals. However, some people find TENS useful for temporary pain relief as one part of their overall pain-management approach.
USING TENS SAFELY
TENS should feel comfortable rather than painful. Do not place electrode pads directly over the spine, broken or irritated skin, or other unsuitable areas.
TENS may not be appropriate for everyone, including some people with implanted electrical devices such as pacemakers. If you are using TENS for the first time, have new or unexplained back pain, or are unsure whether TENS is suitable for you, seek advice from your doctor, physiotherapist or other healthcare professional.
Seek urgent medical attention for lower back pain accompanied by symptoms such as loss of bladder or bowel control, or loss of feeling or movement in your limbs.
TENS is intended to assist with temporary pain management and does not treat the underlying cause of lower back pain.
