TENS Machine After Hip Replacementn
PAIN MANAGEMENT & MUSCLE STIMULATION AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT
Recovering from a hip replacement takes time. Pain, reduced mobility and loss of muscle strength can all be part of the recovery process.
A TENS/EMS machine provides two different forms of electrical stimulation that may be useful during recovery.
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) may help with temporary pain relief, while EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) can be used to stimulate muscles as part of a rehabilitation program.
Following hip replacement surgery, always discuss the use of TENS or EMS with your surgeon, physiotherapist or other healthcare professional before getting started.
TECHNOLOGY THAT COMBINES PAIN MANAGEMENT AND MUSCLE STIMULATION
Our TENS/EMS machines offer DUAL FUNCTIONALITY, giving you both TENS and EMS functions in one device.
One device. Two functions.

BENEFITS OF TENS & EMS AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT
TENS provides a non-medication option that may help provide temporary pain relief as part of your post-operative pain-management plan.
EMS can stimulate muscle contractions and may be incorporated into rehabilitation programs designed to restore muscle strength and function following hip replacement.
TENS and EMS intensity can be adjusted to suit your comfort and the guidance provided by your healthcare professional.
Portable and reusable, making a TENS/EMS machine convenient for use at home as you progress through your rehabilitation.
TENS FOR PAIN AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT
Pain and discomfort are expected following hip replacement surgery and are usually managed using a combination of approaches recommended by your healthcare team.
TENS may be considered as an additional, drug-free option for temporary pain relief during recovery.
TENS should complement — not replace — the pain-management plan provided by your surgeon or healthcare team.
EMS AND MUSCLE RECOVERY AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT
Regaining muscle strength is an important part of rehabilitation following hip replacement.
The muscles around the hip and upper leg play an important role in walking, balance, stability and everyday movements such as standing up and climbing stairs.
Electrical muscle stimulation can cause targeted muscles to contract and may be used alongside prescribed exercises and physiotherapy to assist muscle activation and strengthening.
EMS should not replace your rehabilitation exercises. Your physiotherapist can advise whether electrical muscle stimulation is appropriate for you and how it should be incorporated into your rehabilitation program.
TENS PAD PLACEMENT AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT
Electrode placement following hip surgery requires extra care.
TENS pads should not be placed directly over the surgical incision, broken or irritated skin, or areas where sensation is reduced.
Once your healthcare professional has advised that TENS is appropriate, pads may be positioned around the painful area according to their instructions.
Because surgical approaches, incision locations, healing and pain patterns vary between people, we recommend discussing initial pad placement with your physiotherapist or healthcare professional.
WHEN CAN I START USING TENS AFTER A HIP REPLACEMENT?
There isn't one appropriate starting point for everyone.
Your surgery, wound healing, pain, sensation and rehabilitation program all need to be considered.
Before using TENS or EMS following a hip replacement, ask your surgeon or physiotherapist:
PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE TIP
Did you know that some private health insurers may provide rebates towards the purchase of a TENS machine?
Eligibility and rebate amounts depend on your insurer and level of cover.

PORTABLE SUPPORT THROUGH YOUR RECOVERY
Hip replacement recovery continues after you leave hospital.
Physiotherapy, prescribed exercises and gradually returning to everyday activities are important parts of restoring movement, strength and function following surgery.
A portable TENS/EMS machine can provide an additional option for pain management and muscle stimulation at home when its use is appropriate for your individual rehabilitation program.
USING TENS & EMS SAFELY AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT
Always obtain advice from your surgeon, physiotherapist or other healthcare professional before starting TENS or EMS following hip replacement surgery.
Do not place electrode pads directly over the surgical incision, wounds, infected or irritated skin, or areas where you have reduced sensation.
TENS and EMS may not be appropriate for everyone, including some people with implanted electrical devices such as pacemakers.
Follow your prescribed rehabilitation program and seek medical advice if you experience unexpected or worsening pain, wound problems, significant swelling or other concerning symptoms following surgery.
TENS and EMS are intended to complement appropriate medical care and rehabilitation following hip replacement surgery, not replace them.
