TENS Machine for Shoulder Pain
A PORTABLE, DRUG-FREE OPTION FOR MANAGING SHOULDER PAIN
Shoulder pain can make everyday activities uncomfortable, from lifting and reaching to working, exercising and sleeping.
Whether your discomfort is associated with muscle tension, overuse, arthritis or a shoulder injury, finding suitable pain-management options can help you stay comfortable while addressing the underlying cause.
A TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) provides a portable, drug-free option that may help deliver temporary relief from shoulder pain.
Our TENS/EMS machines combine electrical nerve stimulation for pain management with muscle stimulation functionality, offering flexibility for different needs.
TECHNOLOGY THAT COMBINES PAIN MANAGEMENT AND MUSCLE STIMULATION
Our TENS/EMS machines offer DUAL FUNCTIONALITY, combining two different types of electrical stimulation in one device.
One device. Two functions.

BENEFITS OF USING A TENS MACHINE FOR SHOULDER PAIN
TENS provides a non-medication option that may help manage shoulder discomfort without relying solely on medication.
Electrode pads can be positioned around the painful shoulder muscles to deliver electrical stimulation near the area of discomfort.
Control the stimulation intensity to find a comfortable level that suits your individual needs.
Portable and reusable, making TENS a practical option for managing recurring shoulder discomfort at home.
TENS PAD PLACEMENT FOR SHOULDER PAIN
Correct electrode placement is important when using TENS for shoulder pain.
The most suitable placement depends on where the discomfort is located, such as the outer shoulder, back of the shoulder or surrounding muscles.
For a single channel, two electrode pads may be positioned on the same shoulder, around the painful area, with adequate spacing between them.
A dual-channel machine allows four pads to be used, potentially providing broader coverage around the affected shoulder.
Avoid placing electrodes on the front or sides of the neck, across the chest, or on broken, irritated or numb skin.
If you are unsure where to position your pads, seek advice from a physiotherapist or healthcare professional.
WHAT IS CAUSING YOUR SHOULDER PAIN?
Shoulder pain can have several possible causes.
Muscle Tension & Overuse
Repetitive activities, prolonged desk work, exercise and physical work can contribute to muscular discomfort around the shoulder.
Rotator Cuff Problems
The rotator cuff consists of muscles and tendons that help stabilise and move the shoulder. Irritation or injury can cause pain, particularly during lifting and reaching.
Shoulder Arthritis
Arthritis can cause joint pain, stiffness and reduced movement. TENS may provide temporary pain relief for some people but does not treat the underlying arthritis.
Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder can cause significant pain and stiffness, sometimes making everyday movements difficult. Professional assessment and appropriate management are important.
Pain Referred from the Neck
Not all shoulder pain originates in the shoulder itself. Some discomfort may be related to the neck or surrounding nerves.
TENS may help with certain types of shoulder pain, but it does not correct the underlying cause.
TENS FOR SHOULDER PAIN & MUSCLE TENSION
Muscular discomfort around the shoulder can occur after exercise, repetitive work or prolonged periods in the same position.
TENS may help provide temporary pain relief while you address contributing factors such as activity levels, posture, muscle conditioning and rehabilitation.
If muscle weakness or reduced function is also a concern, EMS may be appropriate as part of a professionally guided exercise or rehabilitation program.
TENS and EMS should complement, rather than replace, appropriate treatment and rehabilitation.
PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE TIP
Did you know that some private health insurers may provide rebates towards the purchase of a TENS machine?
Eligibility and rebate amounts depend on your insurer and level of cover.

USING TENS SAFELY FOR SHOULDER PAIN
Always follow the instructions supplied with your TENS machine.
TENS should produce a comfortable tingling sensation rather than pain. Do not place electrode pads on the front or sides of the neck, across the chest, or over broken, infected, irritated or numb skin.
Do not use TENS if you have a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator, or epilepsy, unless a suitably qualified healthcare professional has specifically assessed its safety. Seek medical advice before use during pregnancy.
Do not use TENS while sleeping, driving, operating machinery or bathing.
If shoulder pain is severe, follows an injury, is associated with weakness or loss of sensation, or persists or worsens, seek medical assessment. Sudden shoulder or arm pain accompanied by chest discomfort, breathlessness or sweating requires urgent medical attention.
TENS may assist with temporary shoulder pain management but does not diagnose, treat or cure the underlying cause of shoulder pain.
